Should we keep Fake Transparency in OpenGEU by default, so that Geutheme applies it automatically, or should we rather keep it only optional?

Fake Transparency for the Terminal in OpenGEU

Now that we have a systray module and that it's going to be integrated in the new E version which Quaker is compiling, do we still need Fake Transparency? Right now, we set it using Esetroot, it slow your system a very little bit and it provides fake transparency effect for the terminal and Etray. The latter is going to disappear now that the new systray module is born. So, do you think it is the case to keep Fake Transparency as a default applied feature in Geutheme or would you rather keep it only optional?

I wish I would only receive 'english' announcements by e-mail xD.

I think for Etray the fake transparency was truly needed, otherwise icons in a small box at the screen corner would have looked horrible. So fake transparency did the trick.

Now that we won't need it, you say the only app left using this is the terminal. My belief is that... users with more powerful computers could turn compositing on in the near future, once we include this "compiz for E" thingy xP forgot it's name, so we could have real transparency. If you have a low end computer, you might not want a slowing down plugin to make your terminal transparent. And to be honest, fake transparency only works for stuff ON the desktop... if you place it over a window, it will still blend with the wallpaper so =P at this point I think it's senseless.

Yah, we don't need it >.< that's my personal belief. This would be just holding on to old technologies. Though you might wait to remove this until they get the chance to use real compositing, so they can choose.

Cheers!

Real compositing is already available in OpenGEU since a lot of time! We have the desktop effects tab in Geutheme, you can activate Xcompmgr or Bling on ANY system, even on a very old one or on a Virtual Machine. So we always had a possibility for our users to enable real transparency. But since both xcompmgr and bling are a bit heavy, on a very old computer many people prefer not to enable them.
Plus, Echomorph (the compiz thing) is already available in OpenGEU since the release of the Luna Serena packages, and it's available for Luna Crescente too.

So, fake transparency is still only for the terminal with all the flaws you mentioned. But real transparency has always been available in OpenGEU since Luna Crescente.

And why cannot you make a choice? The module systray, as I said, is just a systray dockable in a Shelf. This has almost nothing to do with fake transparency, systray module won't use it in any case.

I'm just saying that we are not going to use etray anymore, in any case, the poll is not about using or not etraynm :)

The poll is: since we are not going to use etray anymore, and since it will only be used in the terminal, is it worth to keep it as a default activated option?

I really hated how that worked in 8.04
I had to make sure the background for gnome was the same as e's or the theme in use.

I like the way transparencies work with 8.10 Ecomorph.

I never really found the way fake transparency worked very appealing and thus never used it.

I like the fake transparency.  It works great when I use OpenGEU from the live CD and on my 3D hating Intel graphics card (which has been fixed mostly in Jaunty).

I haven't been around for a while but I'm for anything that doesn't slow down the system. keep up the good work.

Optional!!! Keep it simple, stupid!!!

I think that the default distro configuration should be very basic without too much features enabled.
The decision to enable or not a specified feature is a final user choice.
Imho the best solution is to leave the decision to user and keep fake trasparency for the terminal (which i hate!) disabled by default.

Correct my bad english...

Bye

Just found out conky uses pseudo transparency, I wouldn't want that to stop working if removed.
Def keep it optional.
