How do you OpenGEU?
« on: December 23, 2008, 03:50:19 am »
Hi there!. I saw this interesting thread about presenting how do our desktops look like. It came quite handy, though I'd love some extra help if possible.

Far from knowing how much can I (or want I?) to unveil, the point is I need - for some market research, hehe =P - the following from anyone willing to contribute:

1. ONE (and only one, so choose right!) picture of your desktop, with few windows opened, to see which kind of themes and layouts do you use.
2. One or few pictures of your desktop while using it. That is, how do you arrange windows, use multiple desktops, etc... when actually using OpenGEU? (and not setting up windows to take the picture... that's Request number 1 =P). I'm needing to see how do you use it.
3. Answer: From your current layout (widgets, main bar, etc...) - how much do you use each component? Lot? Little? Sometimes? Always? Once per session? (that is - the launcher, the bin, the main menu, the Windows list, the eTray, etc... etc...). I'm not asking about applications you use, but widgets and bars =P.

At least completing one of the three is enough for you to feel u've contributed =). Please, on requests 2 and 3 KEEP IT REAL. If you provide unreal statistics, it may have negative effects on the future of OpenGEU =( and this duck I'm aiming to with a 9 mm will die, the moment I realize u've been lying... ... No, kidding, I love ducks! =D xD.

Thank you all for your time! Everyone's invited - developers, other team members, users and - why not - visitors with E17.

Bye!! =)

If you can, please contribute to this interesting thread! Of course, the way I use OpenGEU is simply told: the default settings. I created them afterall, and theya re based on my common needs ;)

In any case, one thing I noticed is that in Windows and most Linux distros, when you change from an app to another, you change from one window to another in reality. For example, in the taskbar or window list, you find every opened window in Linux or Windows. In Mac OS, you see every running app, not windows. For example, in Linux, with alt-tab, you change from one thunar window to another. In Mac OS, with command-tab, you change from Finder to Firefox: anbd when finder is choosen, for example you see all the opened finder windows.

Linux doesn't work this way, every single window is seen as a program. Well, This is due to the fact that Mac users can use the Exposè function to change between a finder window and another finder window, for example. We cannot have exposè by default on our system. So, even if I find it better to change from an app to another in the Mac way, rather than from a window to another (it is too confusing and complicated for users, I asked to many friends...), we still don't have a way to easily change from a window to another...

Hi,

I'm all new to OpenGEU and waiting an other 15 min before the live CD is downloaded (though couldn't find a link to 9.10 only 8.10?). Just wanted to say I would love it if "the mac way" was implemented in linux and OpenGEU. I noticed on my partners new computer that windows 7 have taken a step in that direction - but ofcourse not as well done as in mac os X.

best regards, G.

i answer as a guest. i'm using debian-e17.

i use my desktop like that: 4 desktops. three shelves: one with a pager, one with ibar and screenshot-module, one with ibox and systray.
a taskbar on the screen.
first desktop: a terminal for file-management, etc.
second desktop: iceweasel (and perhaps another terminal), if i need it clawsmail
third desktop: virtualbox
fourth desktop: either gimp or pcmanfm (both very seldom).
gadgets and modules i use very rarely. usually i open apps with the launcher and type the command.

here are some shots:
first desktop with gnome-terminal getting autostarted:

second desktop with iceweasel open, the pager stays over the window:

or with a second terminal for training lessons:

third desktop with virtualbox opened:

thats the way i use it. the three of them are always that way with the mentioned apps open.

as said i use the fourth destkop for different stuff, and very seldom.
here it is opened with pcmanfm to find the screenshots:

and here is the shot of a hidden gadget, which i use very seldom:

theme is darkside
shelve-themes are night-bling
wallpapers are from online-searches.

greetings
