Why the need for Xfce panel?
« on: January 13, 2008, 12:56:29 am »
I know a lot of great work has gone into integrating the Xfce panel into e17, but doesn't it create unnecessary confusion with two interface styles on the desktop? The main reason to have the panel would seem to be Orage. Wouldn't the menus be better integrated into the main menu on the e17 shelf and in the left click menu?

The Xfce panel seems to cause a lot of trouble for what little it adds to the desktop. Instead  finding, adapting or even designing new gadgets for the e17 shelf might be a better overall solution.

The Xfce panel would seem to be one of the few major glitches in an otherwise amazingly easy to run distro.

I may be wrong. What do other people think?

I myself believe you're right. We use FBPanel now and it is much beytter but the main reason wee need the panel is for System Tray and Places.
Now, I'd be happy, more than happy, beying able to create new modules for E17 such as a system tray, a places plugin and so on but... I am not a programmer. Anyone willing to help has always been invited here :(
No one seems to be willing to help here in E17 developing for now... hope things will change soon. As soon as we can only use E17 shelves, i'll really be happy ;)
