Deb packages needed by our distro (geubuntu-desktop)
« on: September 20, 2007, 07:03:56 pm »
Hello everyone, I have this great defect, I'm not a programmer. So the project needs some deb packages but I don't know how to create them. Anyone skilled enough to create basic deb packages and wanting to help is welcome. Here's the idea:
creating a metapackage called "geubuntu-desktop" able to install a series of packages to transform a normal Ubuntu into a Geubuntu, as it happens with KDE and XFCE and so on...

Since Geubuntu is surely NOT a simple E17 installed in an Ubuntu, I need some help from you :)

We need the following packages (Contact me in this thread or by PM to have more infos and files to be able to create packages):

- geubuntu-desktop
- geubuntu-artwork (This will install also the splash screens and so on, like with the others Ubuntu metapackages of Kubuntu etc.)
- geubuntu-configutations (Programs to startup, etc.)
- geubuntu-themes (Metapackage for E17 themes and GTK themes for geubuntu)
- geubuntu-core (all the E17 system)
- geubuntu-apps (All the extra E17 applications installed and contained in geubuntu, not default of E17)

So, can somebody help on this :D ?
Installing these packages will have people able to upgrade to gutsy gibbon automatically even with the enw packages for Geubuntu. SO we need this packages in a feisty version and then we'll work on a Gutsy new version too, with new artwork maybe and new configs and so on :)

As for Gutsy we need to create new packages for the current versions of some very interesting apps unavailable now for Ubuntu in a deb format. I'm talking about:

- Exhalt
- ITask-NG
- emodule-Bling
- winlist-ng
- Eppp

To know all of this apps, hoping they will be included in Geubuntu Gutsy, you can visit this link:
http://www.e17-stuff.org/index.php?xcontentmode=7100x7110x7120x7130x7140x7150

Thanks for the attention!

My friend/co-worker dev of Fluxbuntu said he can do this for you.
I am currently GEUbuntu also.
he says you guys will need to start an irc channel, and contact him on freenode "joejaxx" or myself on freenode "robnyc or lycannyc"

Hi Lycann, I'm very happy to hear this news from you! We'll consider starting soon an IRC channel but by now I dunno if it is the case or not: for example I wouldn't stay there too much time, we're very busy in life :(
But I do read mails and follow the forum and at a certain time, when we'll have a reasonable number of collabrators to this project, we'll surely open a channel for Geubuntu on irc. If your friend can help, could he please contact us via Private message so we can give him / you our mails? If a collaboration at a channel level is really needed we'll consider subscribing for one surely... looking forward for an answer pal!

Actually I signed up in this forum, since he's already signed up on too many.
He said the best way to contact him is through irc.freenode.net #fluxbuntu (nickname: JoeJaxx)
At the moment.. we can also start off the irc channel for you if you'd like.
Since we idle a lot on irc. That way it can be posted on the site and users can start coming and channel starts growing
I'm currently using GEubuntu :)

For me it would be the best. If you can create an irc channel for the project I'll be very happy about it. Call me in when it's done, I'll also update the site according to the info you'll give me! And thank you very much for the participation already from now....

been googling a bit about Enlightenment and ubuntu, and i found another project that seems a little bit like this project
Elbuntu ( http://e17blog.tuxfamily.org/elbuntu.php / https://launchpad.net/ebuntu )
they may have some package you can use, or mayby collaborate with.

Hope this info helps :)

Hi Xy, this project was born exactly because Elbuntu and Elive do exist. While Elive is an official E17 project, I like it but it has some defects I cannot live with. Elive is not for total beginners, since it is some kind of an alien desktop for normal people. It has no tray icon space, lacks a great number of tools and configurators, even if it has a stand-alone and dedicated configuration system.
Elbuntu is then an E17 port to Ubuntu, ok, but it is apure E17 desktop, without any tool for configuration, without a tray icon space, again, and it is really difficult to use. I'm not talking about the fact that it has almost no applications or dedicated themes in it. Well, I mean, it doesn't look at all like an Ubuntu derivate. With this I mean that it is not userfriendly at all.
If you read the main page you'll discover that the Geubuntu goal is a completely different one than bringing people just an E17 alone desktop. People may like it or not but Geubuntu means to mix some gnome applications, configurators, and functionalities with those provided by E17. The fact is that E17 is not a Desktop Enviroment but a set of libraries and a Desktop Shell (More than anything else, it is a Window Manager), so it is not designed to provide a full working desktop for everyone. A lot of pro users love to use a pure E17 desktop, but they often have to run the command line too, and this is not Ubunt-ish at all.
Geubuntu, on the other side, has for example a panel giving you a working tray icon space for programs like gnome-power-manager, update-notifier (Do you know that in elbuntu / elive you have to manually update?) and the likes.
That's a big difference, since from the panel you can also run particular applications from gnome to configure some aspects of your desktop and system like the gtk theme and so on.

Well, there are an enormous numbers of differences. The fact is that Geubuntu tryes to give people an easy to use, ubuntish, E17 desktop. Try out Elbuntu and tell me if it is an user-friendly and immediatelly configurable desktop, than we'll talk about it again ;)

Plus, from the next release, Geubuntu will have fully original themes, backgrounds, login screens and so on, it will have a much more indipendent soul :D
Eyecandy is very important for an E17 desktop.

ahh!! that sounds great!!
I am running Elbuntu atm but as you say it is lacking stuff like systray, a good default UI, update manager, and some help getting started with UI config because I cant find how to make all those nice panels and stuff, but I don't mind console stuff but I do mind having to do extensive console work, apart from that I am rather pleased with it, but if a "Geubuntu-desktop" package gets released then I am going to apt-get´it :)
Hope this project gets many developers and make a revitalise of E17 development, a stable release is what E17 needs now :)

It would really be nice... but if no one is going to help us here, it will be difficult for deb-packages to be released any soon :(
Even if I'd like so much to release deb packages dammit, I can't create them... Please, you can try talking about Geubuntu around and see if someone's going to help us out with simple deb packages creation...

Hey darkmaster,
I just found your distro last night and love it.  I do not have any experience with building .deb packages.  However, I do want to learn, and would like to start by building something useful.  What packages are you looking for?

Currently, packaging of to-be-compiled tools is being handled by Intilinux. Please contact him for more details if you want to help us :)

Please update.  Have we found a maintainer?  I've built some meta-packages in the past, so I could at least help on those.  But I see this thread hasn't been updated in awhile, so wanted to check whether the need still exists first.

OK, sorry, maybe we should mark it in some way. We have few packagers and mantainers now, it is not a priority anymore. Thanks anyway :)
