Buying a new monitor. Help?

And you're right, i have some 4:3 tablets here and they can get a little weird on a 16:9 monitor.

Yeah, it's supposedly cheaper to manufacture at the same ratios and resolutions as televisions. That's also why nearly everything is stuck at 1920x1080 when I'd love to see more push into higher-res displays. (Doesn't help that operating systems still suck at DPI awareness...) I'm still using a couple 1680x1050 displays because I don't want to move to 16:9; hopefully by the time I replace them sanity will return. There's been a resurgence of non-16:9 ratio displays lately in mobile devices, a lot of 16:10 and 4:3 stuff, so maybe there's still hope :)
16:9 monitor with a 16:10 tablet isn't quite as bad as mixing widscreen and 4:3, but it's more insidious. It's close enough that the results are more subtly distorted, so you might not even think about it until it's too late.
Pesho:
Well you can always crop the tablet's active area to match any ratio, but you're losing a little space that way. I've never used 16:10, my jump was from a 4:3 CRT monitor at 1024x768 straight to 1920x1080/16:9 so it might as well have been anything ;) If all the televisions are 16:9 as you say, it probably makes more sense to have monitors match though, the way it did with 4:3...

Yeah, I mentioned that originally. It sucks to lose the space, though. :( The laptop I got in 2009 has less height physically, and the same vertical res, as the laptop I got in 2003, while the majority of current 16:9 monitors have fewer vertical pixels than my old CRT monitor from 1997. Such a shame :P
Back to the original topic, though: I don't know what the aspect ratio for non-wacom tablets tends to be, so the original poster probably should check the ratio of his tablet (whatever it is) and try to match it if possible.
Grant M:
I'm using a small wacom bamboo. So far, it seems to behave nicely with the monitor I ended up purchasing. (ViewSonic VP2365-LED)
With what was available in my area, and after reading many reviews, weighing the price factor, and following the advice in this thread, it seemed to be the best option for me.
It's bright, crisp, easy on the eyes, has really incredible side viewing angle performance. No HDMI, but I don't really need it anyway.
Going from what I'm used to, it's an enormous step up!
I'll be looking into colour calibration next.
A HUGE thank you again to all you folks for taking the time to lend a hand :)
