Buying a new monitor. Help?
rublev1360:
@Grant : I'll give you the same advice Rainart gave to me when I had to buy my first serious monitor: don't go cheap, but try to go for the best choice possible. You'll spend days in front of it, it's basically the way you "connect" to your artworks and so having a good quality monitor is an incredibly valuable fact. Calibrating it with dedicated tools is a must depending on which industry & activities you're into, but you can live without it until a client/project requires it. Read a lot of reviews and understand what's the best monitor you can afford, after few days of efforts you'll become a little expert about the topic and your mind will be more focused on what matters. Talking about technology, Pesho said everything correctly; what matters is what's used in the panel, not the lcd/led thing :)
In case you're curious: in the end I did buy a NEC 2490WUXi2 and it's a beautiful, beautiful monitor. I did change the workstation some times already but the monitor is still here and a dream to work with -- and also to use in general; I also play with this machine and the monitor is behaving wonderfully with all kind of games, even at crazy fps. The panel technology for this monitor is H-IPS A-TW TFT.
I hope it helped, good luck!

It's cool to get such great advice from this community's artists. I had hoped this thread would become informative for others looking to upgrade as I am. And it has!
Currently I am still 'window shopping' until payday, as I don't want to cheap out & be disappointed. Being armed with some knowledge as I am now, will make it easier.
Thank you very much, all of you :)

That's a very interesting choice - it's older (16:10 ratio), but fancier than my HP ZR2240w which uses the cheaper E-IPS and no A-TW filter. There are some very nice in-depth reviews at TFTcentral here:
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/nec_2490wuxi.htm
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/hp_zr2440w.htm
In their reviews, they always show some colorimeter results too, which could help with the calibration.

16:10 is the only widescreen ratio I like, personally. A few companies still release monitors in that size, so it's not completely dead, but it's a shame 16:9 is so widespread. 16:9 might be nice for watching videos, but it feels far too squished vertically.
It's also the ratio used for the active area on modern Wacom tablets - the Intuos 4 and 5 both are 16:10 - so getting a monitor with a matching ratio is ideal. Otherwise you either end up with skewed shapes or accurate lines at the expense of creating a dead zone on part of your tablet.
Completely unrelated: the CAPTCHA this forum has started using is bloody annoying. I keep having to request five or more images before it will give me a legible one.
Pesho:
With 16:10 you get more vertical area, but most companies have decided to adopt 16:9 as the standard because apparently it was cheaper to manufacture... And you're right, i have some 4:3 tablets here and they can get a little weird on a 16:9 monitor.
