I already asked what those motives are and how developers decide what to work on. All i got was a braindead response: "Use another program and operating system".

You say that developers are aware that it would be beneficial to have selection tools - does that mean they may show up in future versions, or is there some kind of general vision for MyPaint to never have this sort of functionality? Because judging from the responses in this thread so far, it seems to be the latter.

People here in this forum are also volunteers, and if they don't like the technologies or the approach that you are using, they will tell you what they would do in your place, which may not be what you like to hear yourself. Trying to make them look like idiots will not change the fact that you have neither the right nor earned the reputation to demand for a better answer.

I didn't get a good answer before i got the "bad reputation" and i don't expect to get one now either. You know what they say: garbage in - garbage out.

Some of the questions about goals and intents have been answered in the documentation:

http://wiki.mypaint.info/Documentation/FAQ

See section 1.2.2 and 1.2.16

Which is basically the same thing I stated at the beginning of this thread. I'm not one of the developers, so can't speak for them, but as far as I can see, MyPaint is not trying to be another GIMP or PhotoShop... why duplicate those features that already exist? MyPaint is more like using a canvas and brushes, only it's all digital. If you need to correct your art, do what you would do with real canvas and paint, either erase it or paint over it. I think MyPaint is wonderfully simple and doesn't need much else, except maybe some fine tuning of the current feature set. If you want GIMP features, go use GIMP.

Alright then, thank you idragosani for giving me a proper answer. There were talks of porting the MyPaint brush engine to GIMP, which would provide a suitable application for both types of users (Windows support included). But that would require (from what i've understood) converting the library from C++ to C which is a hassle one might not want to bother with. In any case, it's clear that MyPaint is not worth investing much time in. It's great at what it does right now, but there are no prospects of having anything more than that in the foreseeable future.

I hadn't heard about MyPaint brush engine being ported to GIMP. You might look at GIMP Painter also (although not sure if it's available on Windows), it's an oldish fork of GIMP to include painterly brushes (smear brushes). I still think MyPaint is better for painting and sketching, though (the infinite canvas is ideal for that). Krita is another option, and there is a Windows port for version 2.4 now, although it is experimental (they would be overjoyed to get more people testing it on Windows).

idragosani, it was discussed on the GIMP mailing list: https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gimp-developer-list/2012-April/msg00220.html and also in the GIMP IRC channel. I'm probably going to port brushlib to C, but that doesn't mean it will be integrated into mainline GIMP.

And sure enough, I see this being discussed on a blog today:

http://libregraphicsworld.org/blog/entry/mypaint-and-gegl-porting-evaluation-begins

This quote is especially apropos:

"Maybe such integration would help fend off all the people who want 1 000 000 features in MyPaint that GIMP already does and has thought-out interactions for :)"
