Saving a predefined image area/size
« on: February 07, 2011, 03:26:42 pm »
Hi there :)
Just wanted to know if there are plans in the next version\s to support defining an exact resolution and area of the canvas to save as image.
Also :
I downloaded the template pack, and I have also had the same idea about creating a template frame for video frame resolutions, but my problem is that my paint does not respect the original resolution of the template and always saves with some extra pixels, usually (or maybe always?) in the bottom and right. Is this a known issue? I know I can crop later in an image editor but I'd like to avoid this if possible.

sorry for mostly duplicating this post from the "template pack" thread, but it was suggested I opened a new topic...
many thanks,
jon.

Sorry for being such a fool  ::)
I've read the other recent related post and the FAQ and it seem obvious now that the "extra pixels" are added because of the restriction to multiplications of 64x64.
Unfortunately, video resolutions do not conform to that restriction 1080/720 do not divide by 64  :(

Is there a chance that MyPaint could work with a more relaxed restriction of 8x8, so that output resolutions could be more flexible?

Do you use GiMP as well? Make a frame or backdrop of flat grey (or preferred for your palette) of the desired pixel sizes. Then make sure you ONLY paint on layers on top of that. Using a "frame", you may have that layer hovering above your work instead. It doesn't need to be more than a border of 1 px width, and in a 300 dpi painting, it'll be virtually invisible. That is not necessarily a GOOD thing. You need to know where your boundaries are when painting as well ::)

Open the .ORA in GiMP, select your frame or canvas layer and autocrop (Image -> Autocrop image) the image. This function is available in most major commercial image handlers as well. When saving a flat .TIF or .PSD more suitable for print, make sure to remember pushing the resolution up ;)
