Wacom tablet and monitor aspect ratio
« on: January 15, 2011, 02:23:26 pm »
Today when I tried to draw a circle using a coin as a stencil I noticed that the circle was actually an oval (see picture below). I think it has something to do with Wacom aspect ratio configuration, but I can't find anything useful. Can someone please advise.

I have a Wacom Intuos4 6x9 tablet. Computer monitor is an old 4:3 CRT model. Operating system is Ubuntu 10.11.

As far as I know, at the moment, you have to configure this manually. I have the opposite problem: my screen is wide and the tablet "normal". I also prefer to have a bit a smaller active area. I use the bash script below to map the bottom area of my tablet. Obviously you would have to change it for your needs.

Code: [Select]
stylus="Wacom Intuos3 6x8"

(( w = 40640 )) # intuos active area
(( h = 30480 )) # intuos active area
# 1920 1080 <-- wide screen (16:9)
(( w2 = w*6/10 )) # use only 60% of the tablet width (free choice)
(( h2 = w2*9/16 )) # calculate the height to make the ratio correct
(( topx = 0 )) # active area starts at the bottom left of the tablet
(( topy = h - h2 ))
(( bottomx = topx + w2 ))
(( bottomy = topy + h2 ))

xsetwacom set "$stylus" topx $topx
xsetwacom set "$stylus" topy $topy
xsetwacom set "$stylus" bottomx $bottomx
xsetwacom set "$stylus" bottomy $bottomy

That's a really great script. I'll save it in case I need it later. I did a bit of searching on the Internet yesterday and found out that there is an option in Wacom Linux driver that enables tablet to emulate your screen aspect ratio:
Code: [Select]
Option "KeepShape" "on"

In Ubuntu it's in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-wacom.conf. It helped me to solve this issue.

Nice, I hope this becomes the default one day.
