Try different methods until you find one that you feel comfortable with. There is no cheating, except for photoshop filters on a photo perhaps. There is just different ways to achieve what you want to do.

Hye p33p ,
Like you i have no formal art training behind me ( except self-education ) , I don't  use grid and  scan  or others techniques, just draw on the canvas, but....
before directly directly draw, you can make some preparatory works like thumbnails, composition, big shapes , color research , and so on...
and i don't think there 's a sort of "hope" in drawing (painting) process , perhaps some accident but essentially more or less mastered ....

But don't hesitate to choose your OWN method :
- scan is cool if you are more confortable with a "real" pencil.
- grid is not  copy  , it is used to get the right proportions and positions..

These are only tools to achieve your goal : make a good paint , that's all.

Your Rosie the Riveter is well done.

Good work!

One thing I like to do is to model the basic shape with circles and add a couple of center lines:

I think it is important to work quickly in the beginning, this stage shouldn't take more than a few minutes:

Because if you do, you won't have to think "Oh no! The nose is too long, and I've spent half an hour doing it and the mouth.. I don't want to erase after doing so much work on them!"
I've been there and kept on painting, knowing that there were basic flaws in the picture, because too much work had been invested to erase. :)

Two minutes later:

Ok, it's better but the mouth is too small. No worries, I only spent a minute doing it.

I hope we (or more specifically, I) didn't offend you somehow. I have poor social skills and sometimes I do that to people, but I never intend to.
