sjarn, character for animation movie
« on: June 15, 2012, 09:56:56 pm »
Hi,

I'm quite new to this, and actually I'm a bit nervous, showing what I do, because of all the high quality stuff around here in this forum. But I just have to get over it, and need to show it to get some feedback. I desperatly need feedback. One of my problems is, that once I have some result, I often am too afraid to continue because I'd mess it up too much.
Anyways, here is something I made, a character for the animation movie I want to make. This is one of the many that I'll have to create.
All hints and tips to make this better are welcome. Also, I'll need to create some sheets from it to create my 3D character, as guides. All hints at tips to make that possible are very welcome too.

I know, the file is called GimpGit, that's because I started out in Gimp before I knew about mypaint. 90% of it has been done in mypaint. I switched to Gimp some times for the ease of adjusting overall color, brightness, contrast and for the selection tools.

For some mysterious reason, the attachment is lost. Anyways, here an updated version

I put it back, something must have gone wrong, because the first time I uploaded the image it was way too big... now shows really as 'attachment'  :)

It's off to a good start! What you should do is develop front/rear, side and 3/4 front and 3/4 rear also (the classic "turnaround"). Put the character into some real poses, too, like running, sitting, jumping, and so on... and what does she look like when she is happy, angry, sad, frightened, etc? you will get a better feel for showing your character's personality when she is doing things rather than a neutral stance. That's an important aspect of a character design for animation.

Thanks for the replies. I'll soon start working on some other drawings for this character. Now I'm fixing the manuscript on which the story is based for the script. Multitasking is what I'm getting quite used too :).

The funny thing is, I actually started, learned 3D to make a 3D-character to improve my drawings, so I'd have a reference of the same character to draw in different positions. Now I do it the other way round, I first need to draw the character in different positions to get a good reference for the 3D-model. It's almost the chicken and egg problem...
