What is everyone's favorite way to back up work?
« on: January 31, 2012, 12:38:20 am »
Hey everybody, I'm up to about 20 panels sketched, and I am starting to get worried about backing up my files someplace safe so they don't disappear, get corrupted, or get locked up on my hard drive if my computer seizes up. With something like 400 panels to go, it could get very bad to re-create lost ones.

(not that I expect any calamities, but once our neighbor's house burned down. yikes. :-\)

what is your favorite way to back up your work? on disc or memory stick stored at work? on a server somewhere?

Thanks!
James

Dropbox is a good way to get an extra layer of piece of mind. I always keep a backup with it. Free too.

Hey Kehaar,

Here I have a little external 2'5 hard disk USB powered where I duplicate all my personal data to create a backup in case of disk failure or disk crash. You can do it manually by copy pasting your files, but you also can find software who can does those backup for you.
On my kubuntu system, I use a mix of 'rsync' command line, and the utility 'backintime' ( http://backintime.le-web.org/ )

For Windows XP, 2003, Vista, 2008, Windows 7  there is the open-source http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm

GrantM propose also a good solution with online file hosting, but they need internet for restoring/saving your files, they are slower than a hard disk , and the storage size is limited. The good point with them is you can get access to your file from everywhere.

I use a 750GB Seagate goflex  to store a backup mirror and my 'archives' ( archive are all past project zipped with names like this YYYY-MM-DD_projectname_projecttype ).
I also have an older Seagate Freeagent to do a mirror copy of my archives.

Those are also great backup ideas, David. Thanks!
I think the best solution is to backup to multiple locations :)
