I don't know if this is an OpenGEU problem or a general Linux problem, but I hope someone can help.

When I went to log in this morning via GDM, the system informed me that I needed to set a new password. I followed the prompts, entering my old password, but then got an error message that the change of authentication token had failed. I didn't set up a separate administrator account or set a admin password under Ubuntu, so I'm effectively locked out of the system.

I tried rebooting, using the recovery system to drop down to a root prompt and using the passwd command, but I got an error that the Module wasn't loaded.

Any suggested workarounds?

Thanks.

OK, I found a workaround. I booted using a LiveCD and edited /etc/shadow to extend the password expiration date. But I'd still like to figure out why the password reset didn't work properly so I don't run into this again.
