Hi, all.

First, I'm happy to see the new version become available. Thanks to Darkmaster and the rest of the team for all the hard work to make this happen.

I have looked at the wiki entry about upgrading, and I'm afraid I'm still not clear about a few things. Would the following be the correct approach to upgrading from 8.10?

Upgrade to Karmic
Enter new repositories
Upgrade OpenGEU

Or do I need to upgrade the repositories before I upgrade the OS?

Also, what would happen if I tried to use the OpenGEU upgrade assistant? Would that walk me through all the steps?

Thanks very much.

Hallo, the OpenGEU upgrade assistant, right now, is configure to perform a normal apt-get update - apt-get upgrade, it does not dist-upgrade for now.
First, before u upgrade, please consider that 64 bit packages are still to be released. I386 packages have a problem with E17, it segfaults often, even if this does not affect day use really, it's sufficient to click on the restart E button and everything continues as it was, that is no window crashes, etc.
But we noticed these problems and are trying to debug them. Surely we'll fix things soon.

So, if u want to upgrade anyway and u have an i386 system (no 64 bit yet) I suggest u to install a gnome session or something like that and then do the steps you mentioned from the other session. The ideal is that of upgrading to Karmic, then add OpenGEU new repos and then install opengeu-desktop from the other session.

Thanks. I am on a 32-bit system, so I think I'm set. I'm glad you mentioned installing a Gnome session, because I would have forgotten that.

Unfortunately, so far it's not going well.

I've upgraded to Karmic, and that seems to have gone fine. During that process, two repos were added to my system:

opengeu.linuxfreedom.com/ubuntu/karmic e17
opengen.linuxfreedom.com/ubuntu/karmic opengeu

Using the instructions from the wiki, I fetched the key and I also added:

opengeu.linuxfreedom.com/ubuntu karmic main extras

I selected "mark all updates", then double-clicked on opengeu-desktop. When I went to proceed, I got the following error message:

opengeu-desktop:
Depends: opengeu-default-configurations but it is not going to be installed
Depends: opengeu-themes but it is not going to be installed
Depends: emodules-opengeu-all but it is not going to be installed
Depends: emodule-extramenu-opengeu-data but it is not going to be installed
Depends: ecomorph-e17  but it is not installable
Depends: ecomorph-e17-data  but it is not installable
Depends: shellementary  but it is not installable
Depends: libetk1-bin  but it is not installable

I went and tried reloading again, and I noticed the following error message:

W: Failed to fetch http://opengeu.linuxfreedom.com/ubuntu/dists/karmic/Release  Unable to find expected entry  e17/binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)

So, any guidance?

Sure, remove

opengeu.linuxfreedom.com/ubuntu/karmic e17
opengen.linuxfreedom.com/ubuntu/karmic opengeu

Leave only this:

deb http://opengeu.linuxfreedom.com/ubuntu karmic opengeu main extras

then apt-get update and install opengeu-desktop

Thanks, that solved that problem... unfortunately, I now have more.

I can't connect to the network... when I try to run the network app I get a notice that Enlightenment can't find it. I've had to boot back into Gnome to get on the Web.

Worse, I've had a couple of segfaults that did not permit me to recover - I had to reboot.

Again, any ideas welcome.

eh, for network I have no idea, this doesn't seem to be E related (try running from terminal nm-applet). If it is, maybe u should try to use the first run wizard session, configure your system as OpenGEU, choose your ibar apps and then log out and re login after u'll be entered in opengeu. In started app u'll have network manager directly

As for the segfaults, this is a problem in the i386 repos, we know about it, we are trying to understand what we need to recompile... sorry but u'll have to wait to solve the segfaults problem.

I finally had to manually add nm-applet to the startup apps. Once I did that, it was ok on restart.

Thanks again.

oh no problem man, though using the first run wizard session would have solved your problem anyway.

Actually, I did use the first-run wizard - twice. And it still wouldn't load the network module.

At this point, I've had to delete the upgrade and default back to gnome. I'll keep checking back to look for upgrades.

Thanks.

OK, quick update. While working in Gnome, I noticed that there were a large number of e17 related packages and files still on my system, even after I removed OpenGeu and did a clean-up. On the change that they had not been properly removed before the upgrade, I deleted them, then did a re-install of Quarto di Luna. I still had to manually setup the network manager module, but everything else now seems to be working fine.

Thanks

well, nice, this maybe gives me an interesting hint! We have strange problems of instability of E17 right now... I will try to purge everything and reinstall from scratch!

Hi!
First of all, thanks for awesome distro, really love it! And sorry if my english isn't so understandable, I'm from Finland  Smiley
This is my first post ever to these forums, so far I have found all answers to my problems just by reading opengeu forums, except now I have the same problem, but instructions above don't help me..
When I type "install opengeu-desktop" I got

install: Puuttuva kohdetiedosto-operandi ”opengeu-desktop” jälkeen
Lisätietoja komennolla ”install --help”.

In english it means something like: install: Operandi-destination(or target)file is missing after "opengeu-desktop"
More information with command "install --help"

I'm not really sure what this means and that "install --help" doesn't help me at all,  but I think I have to type something after  "install opengeu-desktop"...  So, what should I do?  Smiley Thanks in advance!
