Helps, Bugs and Support / Option to zoom into GIMP pallete
« Last post by Mish on May 21, 2013, 05:30:29 pm »
Hello people

I am using MyPaint from the ppa. The palette feature implemented in 1.1 is great, really useful. In GIMP we can zoom in and out of a palette. I was asking if there was a way to do that in MyPaint, since a palette that I'm using is kinda big but the individual squares end up really really small. If this isn't available yet, can I ask this as a feature request?

I installed MyPaint last night and immediately ran into the issue of it not recognizing pressure from my tablet. I restarted my computer and left it to sit till today, and my tablet started going crazy. I couldn't paint, and it kept bringing up the recent-colors-used color switcher bit. I went into the test window and found this:

(The red bits are what I got while the tablet was disabled; it is of no consequence)

I used the MyPaint 1.0.0 installer for 64-bit Windows, on Windows 7, and my tablet is this Monoprice tablet. A bit of testing with Mudbox and Sketchbook Pro would suggest that the tablet itself is facing no issues.

Any help would be appreciated since MyPaint sounds cool but is currently unusable.

I did a few experiments a while back when the lock alpha was put in. Here is one:

The point is that you can make brushes to cover the canvas with texture which is what I did in this case to get the paper like texture. If you could do this for a proper mask it would be great. Due to the procedurals, it's possible to make brushes that just lightly spray on various even textures.

By the way, where is a good place to put brushes so people can get them? I've got a few wierd ones but I want to put them in threads explaining how they could be used.

Sorry, edited this post several times to get the correct image. I have better examples somewhere.

Look for mypaint material on deviantart. There are numerous groups that contain a great variety of brushes. There are a few on the official wiki website as well.

blurymind, I can see why the developers are keen to keep things simple and it probably is a good check anyway so the app doesn't get bloated and the simple UI and workflow messed up. Obviously it's all time consuming and up to them to do whatever they want. At present Mypaint is really good on basic level. I think it's the best app to use for quick drawing. Very smooth lines. Other features need to compliment how Mypaint works in this regard. There isn't any point in it having lots of features that are in Gimp or Krita but some features do add to it's simple drawing and painting approach because you wouldn't need to move to and from other apps just on a drawing level.

I was actually slightly out of date before. I see that the frame does at least cut the picture down to the frame.

Thinking about it now, it makes me wish we had it even more. Imagine using a layer you imported from a png that has an alpha (for example cracks) as a stencil.

Yes, this is one use. I think masking gets around all sorts of other limits for creating various textures and shapes without adding a host of other tools.

It's also possible to make brushes in Mypaint that can be used for texture due to all the crazy extreme procedurals. You can spray on a paper texture. I prefer this to tiling since you can just forget about seam problems and you create any variations you like across the canvas. Of course you can't do that as a mask. This is one of the limits.
